Armament Systems

From its founding, AAI has been a significant participant in armament programs for all branches of military service. Even today, armament systems remain one of our core competencies.

Our capabilities include design, development, and fabrication supported by test ranges, instrumentation, modeling software, rapid prototype facilities, and manufacturing. Program experience includes ammunition, practice ammunition, shoulder-fired weapons, hand-held weapons, machine guns, and grenade launchers.

We demonstrate innovation by creating unique solutions for warfighters, and are recognized for these efforts within the customer community. Related activities include sights, fire control for small arms and medium caliber systems, mounts, medium caliber fuzes, systems analysis, human factors, advanced materials, producibility, and packaging.

Lightweight Small Arms Technologies

AAI’s Advanced Programs business unit is developing a next-generation family of high-performance, lightweight weapons and advanced technology ammunition. Our key design considerations include scalability of the ammunition caliber and applicability to a family of weapons, as well as affordability and producibility of weapons and ammunition.

We have successfully developed and demonstrated a prototype weapon and ammunition that provides up to a 50 percent reduction in weight compared to the current assault weapon carried by infantrymen, as well as a 50 percent reduction in ammunition. The weapon design maintains the lethality and reliability of existing assault weapons while offering improved ergonomics. Other design objectives include reducing maintenance and training time, as well as ensuring compatibility with the Future Force Warrior Soldier System.

Advanced Mortar System (AMOS)

The Advanced Mortar System is one of the most lethal and survivable mortar systems in the world. Utilizing twin 120mm barrels, the breech loaded mortar system supports a rate of fire at 24 rounds per minute and a multiple round simultaneous impact of up to 14 rounds impacting the target at the same time.

We have been granted the design and manufacturing license for this turreted mortar system from Patria-Hägglunds Oy of Finland. This will allow 100 percent production in the U.S. The AMOS is currently in full-scale production for the Finnish Defense forces, with follow-on production planned for the Swedish Defense forces.

In addition to wheeled (6x6 and 8x8) and tracked combat vehicles, the AMOS turret system also has been integrated onto a high-speed combat boat.

105mm Light Gun

The 105mm Light Gun, originally developed by Giat Industries S.A., has been designed specifically as a “move and shoot” weapon system for rapid deployment and intervention by expeditionary forces.

Enhancing ease of deployment, the gun is small and lightweight, yet very robust. The system has a variant that is transportable inside a V-22 Osprey. It can be air-dropped or parachuted into position, and can be towed by any four-wheel-drive vehicle.
