Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Support

In-Field Support

AAI Services Corporation provides skilled field service representatives (FSRs) for UAS to support customer requirements for technical assistance and logistics support. Our Unmanned Aircraft System Specialist® program is unique in the industry, and provides comprehensive training for AAI FSRs in systems including automated launch and recovery systems, ground control systems, data link technologies, as well as the aircraft themselves.

Personnel are selected based on experience in military aviation and UAS maintenance, as well as the repair of sophisticated electronic systems. Our FSRs are equipped with the latest tools and test equipment to support a wide variety of tasks including:

-Electronics repair (to the circuit card level)
-Software troubleshooting
-Component and composite repair
-Air vehicle engine periodic maintenance
-TCP/IP network setup and maintenance
-Command, control, communications, computers,
-and intelligence (C4I) connectivity
-Data link troubleshooting
-Launcher hydraulics and pneumatics
-Payload repair
-Logistics support

We have supported Shadow® and Pioneer® aircraft operations for more than 20 years, including deployment operations in four armed conflicts: Desert Storm, Kosovo, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom. Our FSRs travel all over the world to work side-by-side with customers, supporting UAS operations.

UAS Training

As the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and system integrator for the Shadow® unmanned aircraft system (UAS), AAI is uniquely positioned to apply its proven training capabilities in support of system training needs.

The Shadow Training Aids, Devices, Simulators, and Simulations (TADSS) high-fidelity suite is designed to provide time- and cost-efficient individual, crew, and collective training. It supports skill development for Shadow air vehicle and mission payload operators, launch and recovery personnel, and mission commanders.

Our TADSS suite includes an instructor operator station, two ground control station training stations, launch and recovery computer-based training, a staff/leader role-player station, and launcher and air vehicle part-task trainers.

The Shadow crew trainer interactive multimedia instruction (IMI) module provides students crew skills training on how to successfully conduct pre-launch operations checks. The IMI is used by a launch operator to progress through the pre-operations checks and call-and-response communications with the air vehicle operator and mission payload operator in order to successfully prepare the UAS for launch. The IMI is fully compliant with the U.S. Army operations checklist.

Our system is supported by Web-hosted IMI that allows students to train anywhere, anytime. It is a PC-based system through which students can conduct activities such as mission planning, pre-flight inspection, engine start and systems checks, emergency procedures, tactical flight mission operations, target observation, route reconnaissance, target handover, zone and area reconnaissance, and calls for fire.

Performance Based Logistics (PBL: Buying Product Support Outcomes)

Performance based logistics is a successful military-contractor acquisition philosophy that focuses on the purchase of performance and outcomes in product support instead of the products and services alone. In PBL, a contractor earns incentives for meeting stringent performance goals established by the contracting agency, thereby ensuring a high level of readiness for deployed systems.

For warfighters, PBL means mission readiness because they know that we are providing a proven, seamless maintenance and supply system that supports them at all times.

In the field, our experienced FSRs perform maintenance activities and onsite support that enhance the military’s own capabilities. In depots, our technicians deliver high-volume repair capabilities executed through mature processes.

PBL contributes improved weapon system performance, lower life cycle costs, accurate support data, and meaningful financial management for the armed services. In fact, the U.S. Army’s Shadow UAS program earned the first-ever special achievement award from the U.S. Department of Defense for performance based logistics contributions in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
